A recent post on the website of the American Society on Aging gives an example of how rural older adults may benefit from having their mental health issues coordinated with their primary care.
Shirley, a woman in her late 80s in rural Bedford County, Penn., reports that her experience at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Bedford Memorial Hospital has been unique. Her mental health has been valued at the same level as her physical health, and all of her visits to the medical center have been orchestrated among her providers, she says.
Her experience is the result of primary and mental health care integration. That type of integration is particularly important for older adults.
